Visit Town Square Park
In the heart of Anchorage is a stunning park, a favorite meeting spot and area to stroll during lunch breaks and happy hours. It’s been a hub in Anchorage since 1984 when the city began to renovate the downtown area starting with the Performing Arts Center. In 1988, the Parks and Recreation Department was charged with creating a park in town square with aggregated walks and native landscaping.
Kimball’s Store, a historic landmark from 1927, was preserved and is now featured on the National Register of Historic Places. You’ll find it just one block from Town Square Park. By 1991, a number of organizations were supporting and fundraising for the bricks that are now showcased and highlighted with donor names. There are over 13,000 bricks and more than 100 “sponsored” trees on site.
An Ongoing Labor of Love
In 2008, benches were added to the park and a reinvigorated interest in making Town Square Park an outdoor home away from home for all visitors was kick started. Located between 5th and 6th Avenue, the square is available for special event rentals with a permit and has long been a favorite spot for weddings and outdoor concerts.
You’ll find well-kept walkways, gathering areas and water fountains around the square. An ice skating rink is the focal point and a beloved destination in the winter months. When visiting Anchorage, no trip is complete without a stroll around the square.
