The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is considered one of the most beautiful trails in the nation; this trail gently winds along the coastal miles from downtown to Kincaid Park’s chalet and is by far Anchorage’s most famous trail. Leave the crowded city behind, and explore a local treasure that showcases a long tale of natural history. Wander the fault line of the ’64 quake, look for moose, stroll through scented forests, and admire the sweeping vistas where you can spot fantastic beluga whales and Mount McKinley, North America’s highest peak. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is open all year round, and you can easily hike, bike, ski, run, or rollerblade its 11 miles.
This coastal trail was named after former Alaska governor Tony Knowles, who served from 1994-2002. This place is one of four greenbelt trails in the City of Anchorage. Even though this site’s trail spans 11 miles each way, it is easily picked up from several points in the city, so you can enjoy any segment of the trail and hike as little or much as you desire. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail offers unique views of the Chugach Mountains, downtown Anchorage, Mount Susitna, Mount McKinley, and Fire Island. This site is a multi-use trail, meaning it’s open to cross-country bikes, skiers, and pedestrians. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times.
