The Best Spots To View The Northern Lights
From September to April, you can see the Northern Lights in Anchorage – and you won’t want to miss the opportunity!
The Downtown Viewpoint
The easiest spot is right in downtown Anchorage. A little parking lot near Earthquake Park, it offers a clear view of the skies with minimal lighting nearby, so that you can see the Aurora Borealis. While it’s easily accessible, the downside is that the view may not be quite as clear as if you were to venture farther outside the city, but it’s definitely worth considering if you want to stay nearby.
Skyline Drive
Skyline Drive will take you through Chugach State Park to the parking lot at the start of Mt. Baldy Trail. At an altitude of 1800 feet, you’re far enough outside and above the city to have a really impressive view. This site may be difficult to reach, but it’s pretty hard to beat as far as awe-inspiring beauty.
Reflections Lake
This one requires a bit of a hike, but halfway around the lake is a viewing tower that lets you watch the sky from 30 feet in the air. In addition to the view above, you’ll have a muted view below, as the waters of the lake are clear enough to reflect a muted version of the phenomenon.
