Kumagoro

Kumagoro is a true Anchorage institution, having served up delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine for over 41 years. Founded in 1978 by Itsuro Tamaki, the restaurant’s mission was to bring traditional Japanese dishes to The Last Frontier in Alaska. Kumagoro’s focus on fresh seafood, exquisite rice dishes, and traditional ramen has made it a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike.

In 2019, Kumagoro underwent new ownership, but Itsuro remains a regular visitor and supporter of the restaurant. Jennifer Choi and Steve Lee now run daily operations, and they continue to focus on serving traditional Japanese food while introducing new dishes to the Anchorage community.

Located in the heart of downtown Anchorage, Kumagoro is the city’s original sushi restaurant and the perfect place to experience Alaskan sushi. Visitors can choose from traditional Japanese sashimi and nigiri, large hearty rolls, or Japanese ramen. The restaurant also offers bento boxes for guests on the go.

Kumagoro prides itself on serving the freshest and most authentic sashimi and sushi. The restaurant also offers a selection of Asiak sake, beer, and wine to complement the delicious food. Whether you’re an Anchorage local or a visitor, Kumagoro is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience unique Alaskan-style sushi.

Overall, Kumagoro is a testament to the power of tradition and authenticity in the culinary world. Its focus on fresh ingredients and traditional Japanese dishes has made it a beloved destination for over four decades. With its new ownership and commitment to introducing new dishes, Kumagoro is sure to continue delighting visitors for many years to come.
