Bootcamp Games @ YMCA

YMCA Alaska offers a wide variety of fitness classes for all ages, with both standard and innovative options, but a favorite is Bootcamp Games.  The class combines hard-hitting and difficult bootcamp exercises with fun childhood recess games in order to give you a work-out that will make you really feel the burn, but with a smile on your face.

Krav Maga @ Krav Maga Anchorage

You may have heard of Krav Maga – it’s an Israeli martial arts/self-defense system that values efficiency over grace or form.  And, while the self-defense aspect can come in handy, it’s also very good for releasing frustration and getting a good workout.  Krav Maga Anchorage offers a free trial class so you can see if it’s something you’re interested, but be prepared – it’s an hour of non-stop motion, and you’ll definitely have some bruises the next day, along with a new passion.  As you learn more of the moves, you can even take special courses, such as learning to disarm an active shooter, or how to take down multiple simultaneous attackers.

Ballet is already a pretty tough workout, despite the pretty, etheral appearance to viewers.  Add in yoga, pilates, and strength training, and you have a full-body regimen that will leave you struggling to catch your breath.  The combination of disciplines, as well as the great playlist, leads to a fun and interesting workout that feels like you’ve been dancing for an hour, although you did so much more.

If you’ve had a hard time toning up your stomach, you’re not alone.  It’s a difficult area for most people, but belly dancing can help with that.  The serpentine movements will strengthen your core, increase your grace, and tighten all of those abdominal and hip muscles that other exercise routines miss.  Plus, it never feels like a chore, making it a great option for people who don’t like to exercise.
