Fourth of July in Anchorage
What better place to celebrate the freedom of being American than in the wide open spaces of the Alaska? Anchorage is home to a number of celebrations, and it all starts by turning the entire town red, white and blue. Alaska starts the party early with a kickoff in nearby Eagle River. On July 3rd, the community’s Lions Club puts together a festival with entertainment, games and plenty of food during the day known for having 19 hours of sunlight. Don’t worry—during those five hours without sunlight, you’ll still get a legendary fireworks show.
In Anchorage, Delaney Part Strip is where the festivities take place. The pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. starts the party, leading directly into the local parade at 11 a.m. The parade leads you directly to the festival, open from noon until 6 p.m., which boasts live music, vendors, food and games. Don’t miss the University of Washington Marching band’s performance at 12:30, and the Harvard Club reading the Declaration of Independence immediately after.
Feeling Patriotic?
An annual basketball game keeps you entertained from 7 – 9 p.m., right up until the fireworks. However, if you’d prefer something more off the grid, head two hours south to Seward. The party starts at 12:01 a.m. on the morning of July 4th with a huge fireworks display. Later, the Mount Marathon kicks off.
No matter how you celebrate in Alaska, it’ll be a Fourth worth reckoning with. How will you be celebrating?
