Crow Creek Historic Gold Mine
Gold rush fever has far from vanished, especially at Cow Creek Historic Mine where you can still pan for riches the old-fashioned way. It’s a unique experience a short drive from Anchorage that allows you to re-live the gold mining hey days. First established in 1896, the mine is one of the state’s most famous hydraulic mining operations. As one of the biggest producers of gold deposits in Alaska, it was also relatively isolated and required incredible grit to be successful here.
Since 1969, the Toohey family has been managing the mine. Dedicated to preserving the history and culture of gold mining for visitors, all are now welcome to explore the antiques, gardens, historical buildings and mining equipment. Stroll along the Historic Iditarod Trail, take in the mountain scenery and do your own prospecting on the original claims. There’s still gold produced here, making it an amazing destination for families and even those who are insistent about striking it rich.
