The Iditarod has been going on for 47 years and is one of the most famous events in Alaska. The 47th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins on Saturday, March 2, and the race lasts about 10 days. It starts with the Ceremonial Start in downtown Anchorage, just a short drive from Aptel Studio Hotel. As spectators, you can observe the dog mushers from up-close, and you can follow the race if you desire to. The race then has its restart the next day in the small town of Willow and follows the historic Iditarod trail about 1,000 miles across Alaska with mushers crossing the finish line in Nome.
The weeks surrounding the Iditarod are full of fun events for the whole family. If you are visiting Anchorage during the Iditarod dates, try some of these unique events, as well as some dog-friendly things to do.
Visit the city’s parks:
Anchorage is surrounded by trails and mountains. Visit Conner’s Bog near downtown or Hillside Park. Both have spectacular views for you to enjoy and long trails for dogs to appreciate. These parks have a lot to offer, whether you prefer to simply hike, go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. There are also opportunities for wildlife viewing, so be sure to keep an eye out for Anchorage’s many resident moose while exploring the parks.
Fur Rondy Express Train:
Hop on this special event train with the Alaska Railroad on Saturday, Feb. 23. The train offers a morning and afternoon departure from the Historic Anchorage Depot, located downtown and close to all the Fur Rondy action. The 2.5-hour round-trip journey takes passengers along the breathtaking Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage. The train ride includes performances by an Alaska Native dance group and activities for the family to enjoy. It also includes snacks, games, prizes and more. Even better, children under the age of 2 ride free.
Mushers Banquet:
The banquet takes place on Thursday, Feb. 28, two days before the race begins, at the Dena’ina Center in the heart of downtown Anchorage. During the event, mushers will draw their starting numbers and take time to thank sponsors and participants. The event is a great opportunity to meet Iditarod mushers, ask them questions, and take pictures.
Explore downtown Anchorage
Of course, downtown Anchorage in general is a great place to walk around with your canine friend. It is an extremely pet-friendly city, and is only a short drive away from Aptel. Roaming around the area is a great way to explore and enjoy the city. Walk by all by the local gift shops, city parks and local restaurants.
